Do you remember the days when the lunch bell rang, signaling the excitement of discovering the treasures hidden in your lunch box? Join me as I take a trip down memory lane, revisiting some items—some I’d rather forget—and the iconic snacks and treats that fueled my childhood adventures and satisfied my youthful cravings.
I grew up in a small town in Serbia, where school hours were different, so we always ate at home before going to school. My favorite quick and easy breakfast was turning leftover bread into savory “French toast,” paired with sour cream and roasted vegetable spread. It remains a comforting favorite for me. The strangest breakfast snack I had before school was a raw beaten egg with sugar, which I would chug quickly before heading out.
When I moved to the US, affording school lunch was a challenge, so I ate breakfast at home and had a late lunch after school. I recognize that poverty still affects many kids today, which is why I believe school lunches should be free. The ultimate school lunch menu should offer a variety of foods.
Creating a comforting lunchbox involves filling it with textures and flavors. Pack it with a well-balanced and nutritious mix of protein, fruits, veggies, water, and carbs.

I’d include pickled veggies, dry meats, cheeses, crackers, and bread for a dinner box.
Even though we’ve traded our lunch boxes for grown-up alternatives and our tastes have evolved over time, the nostalgia of those beloved treats still reminds us of the innocence and delight of youth. I hope you can find some classic favorites and discover new tempting treats every time you visit the Walden Place Senior Living Bistro or Country Kitchen and that you never stop making culinary memories.
