Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

As Culinary Director at Walden Place Senior Living, I realized I wanted my food to mean more than filling plates. In a restaurant, guests may remember a great meal for one night. In a community, a meal can become part of someone’s daily life.
That purpose makes the work meaningful. A favorite dish can bring back a childhood memory. A special meal can celebrate a milestone. A familiar recipe can bring comfort on a difficult day. Sometimes, lunch or dinner simply gives someone something to look forward to.
This role still allows for exciting, chef-driven food. The difference is that the food is paired with real relationships. Each meal is a chance to make a lasting impact.
Residents have also taught important lessons about life. They show that slowing down is not the same as stopping. Each person has lived through victories, heartbreak, love, sacrifice, and change.
Taking time to listen matters. Sitting down to hear a resident’s story can be a small gesture, but it carries great meaning. It is a reminder that everyone has something worth learning from.
The little things matter, too. A favorite dessert, fresh flowers on the table, a familiar recipe, or coffee shared in conversation can brighten a day. These moments often mean more than people realize.
One favorite tradition is Flavor Lab. It was created to bring food to life beyond the plate. Each month, residents connect with local farmers, artisans, producers, and food experts.
The topics change often. Residents may learn about mushrooms, honeybees, kombucha, fresh herbs, or handmade pasta. Each experience encourages curiosity, conversation, and connection.
Flavor Lab is not only about tasting food. Residents discover where ingredients come from. They meet the people behind them and share stories of their own. Watching someone light up after learning something new is deeply rewarding.
Success in a senior living dining program takes more than technical cooking skills. The people who thrive are compassionate, adaptable, patient, and curious. They care about the people they serve.
Listening is essential. So is building trust and embracing feedback. Every meal is an opportunity to improve someone’s day.
One word has become an important part of how I lead: pivot. In senior living, things rarely go exactly as planned. Census changes, dietary needs evolve, deliveries are delayed, and priorities shift.
The ability to pivot with a positive attitude matters. It helps the team continue delivering an exceptional experience. Creativity matters, too. Thinking outside the box can turn a challenge into something special.
One moment that stayed with me happened during Spill the Tea with K.C., a monthly resident forum. A resident said, “You really listen to us, and you really fix things.” That comment meant so much because it reflected trust.
The resident explained that the difference was not just asking for feedback. It was seeing changes happen. When residents share a concern, I work to understand the issue. Then, I partner with the team to find a solution.
Whenever possible, changes are made within the next few days. By the next monthly forum, residents receive updates. They hear what changed, what could not change, and why.
Each conversation begins with three questions. Residents are invited to share their negatives, positives, and wish list. They deserve more than promises. They deserve follow-through.
That moment reinforced why this work matters. Great food is important, but lasting impact comes from making people feel heard. It comes from respect, action, and showing residents that their voices matter.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
