As Resident Services Director at Walden Place Senior Living, I’ve seen firsthand how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood is essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.
Creating community starts with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It involves designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel like they truly belong.
From my perspective, every interaction is an opportunity to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and experience the emotional and social benefits that come with genuine human connection.
To me, community in a senior living setting means more than simply having a place to live. It reflects a vibrant, welcoming environment that promotes safety, belonging, and meaningful social connections through shared experiences and lasting friendships.

At Walden, we believe fun shouldn’t stop at any age. Isolation and loneliness can cause real harm later in life, yet laughter, connection, and belonging offer powerful relief. Every day, we work to nurture that sense of togetherness and ensure residents feel seen, valued, and included.
I encourage residents to engage with one another daily by creating a space filled with warmth, learning, and entertainment. Showing up authentically helps build trust and strengthens relationships. And it never hurts to add a little food and drink — they bring people together in the best way.
Our connection extends beyond our doors as well. Each month, residents take part in acts of service that strengthen our bond with the wider community, whether donating to hospitals, supporting local food banks, or expressing gratitude to first responders and community helpers. These activities highlight our values of kindness, appreciation, and purpose.
We also love celebrating every occasion, from national food days and happy hours to live entertainment and even viral TikTok trends. As the holiday season approaches, excitement builds for the many joyful days of cheer ahead.
To help new residents feel at home, I meet with them personally to share all the wonderful events and amenities that make Walden special. I also introduce them to our resident ambassadors, who represent vital parts of life here, such as our veterans group, art club, and Bible study group. Together, we ensure every new resident feels welcomed, supported, and part of something meaningful.
At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at Walden Place Senior Living, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster these relationships can transform daily life — turning our building into a true home and creating moments residents and their families will treasure.
By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we’re not just planning events — we’re building a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, it’s the connections we nurture that make all the difference.
