My Words to Live By

Category: Senior Living

Author: Valerie Monroe, Executive Director

Each year, I select a Word of the Year—a single, meaningful word to guide my focus and intentions personally and professionally. As the Executive Director at Walden Place Senior Living in Iowa City, Iowa, the start of a new year always feels like a chance to reset, refocus, and prepare for both challenges and opportunities. My chosen word serves as an anchor, influencing how I lead my team, support families, and care for our residents. Reflecting on the past year, I’m amazed by how much this practice shaped 2024 in both anticipated and unexpected ways.

Reflecting on 2024: The Power of “Evolve”

My Word of the Year for 2024 was evolve. This word perfectly encapsulated a year marked by significant change, requiring me to adapt in both my personal and professional life. It shaped my decisions, strengthened my relationships, and fueled my personal growth. When faced with challenges, I often reminded myself that, like a caterpillar, evolution is necessary to emerge as something greater.

The lessons I learned through this lens of evolution continue to influence my perspective. They have taught me to embrace change with intention and grace, transforming obstacles into opportunities for growth. This reflection underscores the profound impact a Word of the Year can have on shaping a mindset and fostering resilience.

Looking Ahead: Mindfulness in 2025

As I prepare for 2025, I have chosen mindfulness as my Word of the Year. This word serves as a powerful reminder to stay present, grounded, and purposeful in every moment. It reflects my commitment to embracing each experience with clarity and intention, whether leading my team, nurturing relationships, or fostering personal growth.

Mindfulness encourages me to focus on the here and now, appreciating the journey as much as the destination. It aligns perfectly with my goal to approach the year with authenticity and a sense of purpose.

As the new year approaches, I encourage you to consider choosing a Word of the Year. This simple yet impactful practice is not about having all the answers but about setting an intention that inspires growth and reflection. What will your word be for 2025?

Here’s to a year filled with purpose, evolution, and meaningful moments for us all. Let’s embrace the journey together.
